What to Wear for Your Photoshoot

Here are some easy tips and tricks to follow for your photoshoot to get a cohesive look without being perfectly matchy-matchy (because that’s not real life!) Remember, these photos are supposed to reflect you, so make sure your choices feel natural and authentically you.

Things to Do:

  1. Be Selective
Don’t just throw on anything. You want to find something that makes you feel comfortable and confident. If you feel confident, the photos will reflect that. I personally like to be able to bend and move at a shoot, that way all kinds of poses are possible, sitting, standing, running. You never know what will happen!

  2. Pick Your Vibe
Are you going laid back and boho, sleek and dressed-up, fun and trendy? It’s best to coordinate everyone in your group so that everyone is in the same vein.

  3. Use Colour Palettes
You can use Pinterest or Google to pick a colour palette that you like. That way you can wear multiple colours that go well together, and can avoid all wearing the same colour.
*Pro Tip: Start by letting the pickiest person in the family choose their outfit and build everyone around that colour/vibe.

  4. Think About Your Background
If you’re shooting in a vibrant background you may want to wear something more subtle or neutral. You can also try wearing complimentary colours with the main colour in your backdrop. ex. Yellow/Blue or Purple/Green

  5. Comfortable Shoes
Many shoot locations involve walking on uneven ground or grass. Make sure that you are comfortable doing a little walking in your shoes, or bring a spare pair to walk in.

  6. Dress for the Weather
If it’s cold out, bring your jackets! We can always take them off for a few photos, and then put them back on to warm up. We don’t need you to freeze!

Here are a couple sample colour palettes for inspiration:

Things to Avoid:

  1. Large Prints/Too Many Prints
We want to focus on you and not your outfit! Too many prints in a group can clash and be overwhelming in a photo.

  2. Very Small Stripes
This kind of pattern can cause an effect called moiré in your photos. This is an undesired rippling effect that feels a little like looking at a Magic Eye illusion.

  3. Ill Fitting Clothes
If you have to constantly adjust your clothing or it’s too big, you’re going to feel self conscious during the shoot. It’s best to wear something you feel secure in.

Happy outfit selecting!
